50% say that it rained where they live within the last week. This is just as relevant as any of your statistics.
So Obama's liberal base is angry at him. Explain to me how that translates into votes for a Republican candidate.
Oh, I suppose disillusionment with Obama could suppress the voter turnout at the liberal end of the electorate, except that people tend be more likely to vote when they're pissed off...and America is very, very pissed off at both sides right now.

It just occurred to me that the Republican's best chances for winning the Presidency in 2012 would be if there's a significant fracture in the Democratic Party and a liberal third party candidate showed up to drain votes from Obama. Maybe there is a reason for the current insanity right now.

Regardless of how the right-wing characterizes President Obama as a "Socialist," Mr. Obama is philosophically to the right of Dwight Eisenhower, who would not consider cutting Social Security.
It's evident in last night's speech, when he said, 'both parties are responsible.' No, the #1 reason we have a large debt is from Republicans cutting taxes and waging two unfunded wars. He could have said that but did not.
Apart from being too liberal, Obama's fall from grace with Democrats is that he adopts the talking points of Republicans (e.g. too much spending) in his calculus that independent voters think spending is the problem (instead of job creation.)
Instead, voters were angry about the weak economy, and older voters believed that Obama was going to take away their Medicare and send them to the death panels. And so the way to win those voters back is to cut Medicare and weaken the economy?
Thus, Obama's stimulus was minimal compared to what was needed to jump start the economy -- a major failure in the plan -- a $787 billion plan, over 2 years, with 40% tax cuts.
Democrats believed in 2008 that they were electing a liberal and instead got a center-right candidate, someone like Nixon. That's why they're disenchanted.
