In recent years, bar associations have held that practicing lawyers with a Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree may use the title of "Dr.," "Doctor," "J.D.," or "Doctor of Jurisprudence".
As a person with a J.D., I agree: we cannot call ourselves 'doctor'. Against all bar rules. Only if one obtains a doctoral degree in law may one refer to him or herself as 'doctor'.
When I graduated from law school, I had earned a "J.D.".
I could have continued my studies and gotten a "LLM" (Masters of Law).
Then, if the law school offered (many don't), a doctoral degree (goes by various names).
