Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford, accompanying the rebels, said the opposition fighters were greeted with scenes of jubilation as they made their way through the outskirts of the capital.

As they entered the city, their cars gridlocked the roads, she said, and hundreds of people came out onto the streets to greet them.

The rebels responded with celebratory gunfire, she said.

"We are now just a very short distance from the centre, with more and more people coming onto the streets.

"They (the rebels) had been expecting much more resistance but there has been very little."

"There is absolutely no question in their minds that they have beaten Gaddafi and it is just a question of how he will go," she added.

The quick advance came after the fighters captured the base of the Khamis Brigade, 16 miles west of the capital.

It is said to be one of the best-trained and equipped units in the Libyan military and is commanded by Col Gaddafi's 27-year-old son Khamis.

Aside from the main rebel movement from the west of the city, fighting also broke out in the city's Mitiga airbase, while the suburb of Tajoura reportedly also fell under rebel control.

Gunfire was also heard near the hotel where foreign media are staying.

I wonder how this will turn out? Some other dictator will probably take his place.

Sooo why all of the threads started by the right condeming Obama for starting a 3rd war. Why all of the Condemnation from the Right in Congress for Obama usurping his authority. U.S along with the other NATO countries are to be commended for holding their grounds to force out this dictator. No I do not consideri this a war since there were no ground troops. But hey, I'm sure those same posters who were spewing the loudest venom will be along shortly to change their tune as usual.

Because if your own president doesn't respect the rule of law then how the hell can you expect anyone else to?

Then Impeach him. If he broke the law and he doesn't respect it as you say, move for impeachment. Don't use the excuse the Dem's will not do it, the Republicans had no problem in wasting time passing bills they knew would not pass. Stand up and be counted, move to Impeach, otherwise stop whining already.

Not sure where earlier posts disappeared, but I was saying that future US leaders need to study how this was handled and apply it to future conflices. It doesn't get much better than this. US got other countries in by leading by example, and then kept the others in by providing support and intelligence. It cost US zero casualties, did not break the bank, and it ended in complete success.

Look out people of Southern Europe, i suspect that Gadihafi may launch missiles at them to deter NATO, so he regains air dominace to combat the rebels. and keep control of Libyia, for now.
