"Mr. Bush was a Republican governor with a Democratic legislature, and he was forced to compromise and work across the aisle. When he ran for president, he liked to call himself a uniter and not a divider, and a compassionate conservative. Mr. Perry has not needed to work much across partisan lines, and appears to relish being provocative and confrontational."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/20/us.../20repubs.html

In reading all of the liberal media sites like the article above on the NY Times website that are ginning up a "war" between President Bush and Governor Rick Perry, they seem to say Rick Perry is no compassionate conservative like George Bush. May I remind everyone which state governor opened his arms to the New Orleans victims of Hurricane Katrina by taking in all of those people in and giving them a place to stay and reside in Texas in 2005.

"The state of Texas agreed Thursday to take in three times more refugees from Hurricane Katrina than officials initially expected, bringing the total number of evacuees to at least 73,000. Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced that 50,000 more refugees would relocate to Texas, with plans to house 25,000 each in San Antonio and Dallas. Perry declared an emergency disaster for the state, freeing up money to provide services for hurricane victims. 'The hurricane has created emergency conditions in Texas that will require all available resources of both federal and state governments to overcome,' Perry said. 'We will do all we can as a state and a people to help our neighbors to the east who have lost so much. 'I think we all understand it’s by the grace of God that this terrible tragedy didn’t come ashore a few hundred miles west,' Perry said. 'And knowing such a catastrophe could have happened here, I think Texans have a very special bond between our neighbors to the east who are going through an absolutely unbelievable ordeal at this point in time.'”

Tell me liberal media, who walks the walk of compassion? And I might add, at the time, the governor of Louisiana that Rick Perry offered to help was a Democrat.

Agreed? They had no choice in the matter. The residents of New Orleans are American citizens and had every right to enter Texas.

The state of TX AGREED to house, feed and otherwise support these people for a long period of time.

73,000 poor people with no transportation, no place to live, no way to get where they were going came to Texas thanks to the governor (and I'm assuming the mayors of the big cities involved) agreeing to absorb them and provide them with basic necessities like a roof over their head, food and schooling for their kids. They didn't walk there and they didn't arrive with anything like some person with a moving van full of stuff. 73,000 people.

Brilliant political move...Texas remains solidly red, Louisiana trends red.

And this from someone who supports a property tax exemption for homeowners over 65, but opposes property tax relief for overburdened homeowners under 65. (And renters get to bear higher taxes on their homes but don't deserve any relief at all.)

Because the poor people already living there had no political power to stop it.

The poor people in New Orleans or the poor people in Houston who were flooded with crime and the burden of supporting these people after Katrina?

That's still better than selling crack cocaine in high school and fathering 2 illegitimate children in college like Obama did.
