So - the governor was on a group meet call with some mayors, but I believe he forgot there were some press members on the call.

He goes into what he encountered at a Target store.

The first video is the unedited account. The second is from the local news.

It's amazing to me that he actually asked the clerk why she didn't stop him. Did he just have a mental lapse about CA laws?

I think what happened is a spasm of humanity took over his brain. As a human being, we inherently know stealing is bad. That is simple human nature. The laws of CA go against human nature and what God put into us.

He didn't like being blamed for it. That got him going. Well - he is in a position to change the laws and has done nothing. The worker was on target.

Then he asks the question that all normal people ask... why am I spending $380 when they just can just walk in and take it? Yeah - good question, governor.

A couple of comments on the news coverage.

They said... you can't blame Newsom because the law was passed before he got there. Well - how long has he been in office? He has been re-elected. He hasn't tried to do anything about it - but yet brags about being tough on crimes above $950. Big deal. At least the news was honest about other states dealing with low dollar crimes while CA does virtually nothing.

The end of the news segment describes him turning "white" when someone announced there were 30 people on the call.

Um....there is no law that says you can't stop theft. Every State draws a line somewhere, where a certain theft becomes a felony, and in CA its $950, and anything less is a misdemeanor. Misdemeanors are still crimes, and can get you 6 months in jail, or more if you are repeat offender.

As usual, this sounds good in theory.

A. If a worker did try to stop a thief, they would most likely be fired.

B. If a worker used force on a thief, he would likely be sued.

Do you kind of see the problem in liberal la-la land with coddling criminals?

Stop a few of these people with force, lock them up for a while, and see the crime numbers go down.

Why are you even bothering with this? The newscast & the post above spells out the issue.

I would suggest letting this go. It's a no-win situation for you.

Frankly, it's a really out of touch question for Newsome to be asking.

While the FELONY level of theft in CA might be the 10th out of 50 states, the reality is that not every state has decriminalized the misdemeanors.

So, while one state may make it a felony at 500 instead of 950...they will arrest you for stealing $100 of stuff where other areas will not.

Basically, people aren't enforcing the law...and then turning around touting their tougher laws that they are not enforcing. That's without even touching on the aspect of plea deals from felony to misdemeanor.

Weasel Words.

I have had plenty of family and friends that worked retail over the years and they all say the same thing regarding theft. Companies tell you not to stop or do anything. The liability for the Company is the reason, they don't want to get sued by the employee or the thief if one were to get hurt in an altercation promoted by the Store policy on stopping a thief with cashiers that have no training in apprehending anyone. Employees are often told the reason is it's cheaper to write off the losses and there are additional benefits to writing off a loss to a point, I cannot confirm that is true.

Statements like those were often followed up with the fact that stores do not want to pay for security either and the few that do often still have the same "watch and report" requirement as companies do not even want Security guards getting into altercations. They just want them as visual deterrents and for capturing details of a thief.

This all applies to adults, recently it seems more Theft rings are using minors so I don't know what you do for a 14 or 15-year-old who is being used by a Theft ring to steal retail items, cars, and smash-grabs from parked cars.

Potentially you can be fired if you violate corporate policy, and it has nothing to do with laws, or coddling criminals, - but simply corporate policy. Lot of corporations do not want their employees risking their lives out of fear of getting sued

The claim that they are never stopped, or that its illegal to stop them is pure myth, and for whatever reason you and the OP fell for it.

California bill does not make it illegal for employees to confront shoplifters
https://apnews.com/article/fact-chec...e-808408149947
CLAIM: Democrats have proposed a bill that makes it illegal to confront or fight back against looters, burglars and shoplifters, a move that basically legalizes crime.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. California bill SB 553, which awaits the governor’s signature after passing on Tuesday, doesn’t legalize crime or prohibit employees from confronting shoplifters.

THE FACTS: Social media users are sharing posts falsely claiming a California bill requiring a workplace violence prevention plan would make it illegal for non-security personnel to address crime at their place of business.
