Not sure about the hunting instilling fear. I've read that bears have been known to be actually drawn to hunters by the sound of gunfire. They learned that it could mean a fresh kill, ie food, nearby.

I have heard the same thing. There have been a number of encounters while hunters have been processing there kills, particularly in Montana. However, if the bears became the target, this might change pretty quickly. My understanding is that the bears (both in this scenario and in rural towns) are becoming increasingly bold around people.

This might only work is dogs are allow to hunt them. Hunters prowling around in the woods shooting individual bears on a VERY limited basis will probably not do much to modify Grizzlies behavior to fear humans more than they do already.

Realistically hunters need to modify their behavior when hunting in Grizzly territory.

Does the Idaho F&G allow a sidearm while bow hunting in griz country?

Yes, you can carry a sidearm. Actually, you can carry a rifle while bowhunting. Rifle season is open on bear and lion at the same time as elk archery. (I specifically asked that question to F&G and was given that answer).

A handgun isn't the first choice for griz of course. I carry one even when rifle hunting. If I have to pack out multiple loads of meat, I much prefer carrying the handgun.

Good to hear. Probably want to rethink packing any game out alone when in Grizzly country. I agree on having more than a side arm if confronted with an attacking Grizzly but weight is definately a trade off.

Be careful out there. Sounds like it might be a nasty fall hunting season for Grizzly encounters based on your info on their food supply.

I've got conflicting information from agencies here in CA about carrying during bow season. I really don't care because I'm packing when I'm going in at 4 am alone. There are too many big cats (and illegals) to think it's a walk in the park in the back woods.

Hmmm how to make bears fear humans?
Lets send lawyers and career politicians in the woods. After tasteing the rancid foul meet as these humans would offer the bears will avoid us as they would a raging forest fire.

Yes I agree. I am more worried about the two legged animals in the back county in this state.

Oh BTW on an archery only tag you can not carry a firearm while hunting. This is covered under the small game and big game sections of the Regs. The only exception is if you have a muzzleloader/archery tag.
