Opinions? This is an obvious massive violation of the 1st Amendment, but considering the State pushing it, can't say I'm surprised.
New Sentencing Option: Church Instead of Jail - Local News - Mobile, AL - msnbc.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44619557/ns/local_news-mobile_al/#.TnuByc1OB59 - broken link)
Not a good road to take. I'm still reading stories online about troubled teens and the religious "programs" created for them, many of which have been shut down because of abuse.
Long ago I shed the idea that "church" or "religion" = "good" and recognized that just as often it meant "bat **** crazy"
This has been going on for years, with controversy. I'm speaking of A.A., which is a religious organization, yet judges sentence people to mandatory attendance.
I think it is a great idea .If it is non violent short term, that could be a third alternative . I doubt it will even come to pass, the whiners of the separation of church and state will see to that .That's what's wrong with society no religion,no morals.
Reminds me of a clever men who said this, not too long ago:
"Today Christians stand at the head of this country. I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit. We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past few years."

It's an option not a requirement. Therefore it's not a violation of anything.
