Mexico City lawmakers want to help newlyweds avoid the hassle of divorce by giving them an easy exit strategy: temporary marriage licenses.

Leftists in the city's assembly — who have already riled conservatives by legalizing gay marriage — proposed a reform to the civil code this week that would allow couples to decide on the length of their commitment, opting out of a lifetime.
‘Til 2013 do us part? Mexico mulls 2-year marriage - weddings - TODAY.com

I'm sure the word "leftists" will tick off the right-wingers here, but I think this proposal is a very good idea. It allows more freedom for couples who want to get married, but aren't sure if they want it to be for the rest of their lives. Libertarians should be cheering for this.

I _____, take you ______, to be my wedded wife. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'till death do us part... or for the next two years, whichever occurs first.

If I go to a "two year wedding" I'm totally skimping on that wedding gift.

I'm just surprised this hasn't already started in Califorina, especially among the Hollywood crowd. A marriage for a set number of years with option to renew. Law firms would love this since it would require a lawyer to draw up the specifics of the contract agreement and with each renewal comes a new contract.

Somebody proposing a marriage law that fits with the human propensity for serial polygamy and/polyandry. How stunningly sensible.

So sad, people need the state to validate their relationships.

A temporary committal in a union such as a marriage is no marriage at all.

That would only be a contract and pitiful to represent it as marriage.

A "Free trial" is worthless

I can't help but wonder if this should be in the relationships forum.

It's actually raiing an interesting point or two, and may receive a different debate over there.

With all the drug trafficking problems over there, I think Mexico has much bigger fish to fry at the moment!
