Bodily autonomy is about the right to control one’s own body. It’s about being able to make decisions about your own body without the government interfering. When people say things like, “my body my choice” or “keep your laws off of my body” they are making statements about the right to bodily autonomy. These statement have been largely made as a part of the abortion rights movement.
With the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe V Wade, I’ve seen a lot of bodily autonomy arguments made by people who support the right to an abortion but who do not support the right to make other decisions and choices such as the right to forgo vaccinations or even the right to not wear a mask.
They claim that vaccines are a choice even with mandates and one can just switch jobs, give up careers, homeschool or move if they don’t like the mandate but at the same time argue that asking a women who wants an abortion to go to another state to get one is a major hardship.
When pressed they claim that someone not being vaccinated can cause others to get sick but this doesn’t make sense considering their vaccine is supposed to provide that protection. They claim that a woman’s right to choose and abortion only impacts her ignoring the body that she aborts.
Why do people who claim to support bodily autonomy and choice, not actually support bodily autonomy and choice? Where is the disconnect?
Does your bodily autonomy have any direct effect on me? Are you creating a vector for virus distribution by not getting vaccinated. Are you having kids that you can't support that I will have to pay for? Are you turning yourself into a fried brain drug seeking zombie will with victimize whoever you have to in order to get your next fix?
I am for full body autonomy for everything except I want restrictions on abortion for 15+ weeks. If you can't figure out that you are pregnant in 15 weeks then you're an idiot.
Unborn babies have a right to autonomy too. Maybe they don't want to be killed in the womb.
Yes, that certainly complicates the bodily autonomy for abortion issue.
For me I do see reasons to keep abortion legal to a point. 12 weeks on demand and beyond for serious medical issues. It really is difficult to impossible to support the bodily autonomy of both mom and fetus with abortion. That is my personal compromise on the issue. Some who are vehemently pro choice for abortion deny that the fetus is a human or a life to get around the issue. I don’t agree with that.
