"The National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the country, offered a $5,000 Learning and Leadership Grant to two Wisconsin teachers who intended to use the funds to “help first and second grade students” become “activists.”
Rather like the "just say no to drugs" programs; the "stop, drop and roll" fire lessons, etc.

Actually, there's quite a bit to see here. Training 6 & 7 year olds with Union money to become social activists is very different than teaching these same kids to protect themselves in the event of a fire. Even the Superintendent, who required that the Grant Money be returned recognized the inappropriateness of this and said the following:
"Schroeder said he had specific concerns over “helping first and second grade students ‘understand the role that power plays in their lives’ in effort to ‘create activist messages’ is language that, especially under the umbrella of a national union’s grant foundation, can understandably raise concern.”

Amazing how many social activist books are listed on the NEA's website, isn't it? Including Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals." One would think that a Teacher's Union would be more concerned with referencing and recommending Educational Material...Oh wait, that's exactly what they are doing! Its just some of us have this antiquated idea that the schools should be focused on educating our little ones on their ABC's and Rules of Grammar instead of Rules of Social Activism.

Good Lord. In our school, one of my son's classes decided to raise money for a local cause, and braided little bracelets from embroidery thread that they sold for a dollar each to their classmates. It was a leadership and business project--they made several hundred dollars. The kids had to write a project plan, organize the money and buy the materials, come up with a plan to produce them, and decide among themselves where the money was going to go. That's the kind of thing that they're talking about--getting kids involved in their community to make a difference. In the process they learned about business, math, the developed organization skills--it was all good.

For many decades, schools have had programs to teach the "business process" by having kids learn by actually doing it. That's educational, and non-political, and totally aside from "activism."
That is a world away from trying to recruit and use 1st and 2nd graders as "activists" to promote certain causes that teachers unions like--like paying teachers EVEN MORE. We all know the type of activism that would be supported by such a program, and it would mean more government (read taxpayer) money and more programs, and more spending on "education" even though pouring money into the education system gains NOTHING in terms of improvement.
I'm amazed that we value the opinions and actions of children so much, that they are of value to activist organizations. It is obvious that these children are NOT promoting issues that THEY have discovered and researched, with a background of real-world knowledge and experience. Basically, kids don't even START forming their own ideas until they are mid-teens and understand that the teachings of their schools, their parents, and their towns are NOT the sum total of all knowledge.
If the "activism" was funded by a group who believed in very small government, and abolishment of all social welfare programs, would you still think it was fine to recruit 1st and 2nd graders? How about a business-funded group that endorsed making the minimum wage a penny a day, and 10 years of free service to a Big Business as a requirement of citizenship? How about a group seeking to make Islam the national American religion, required of all citizens? How about a group promoting terrorism as the only means to effect change?
How bout teaching them how to read, write and add and subtract first?? No better to warp their minds and keep em dumb and do what they're told by their leaders.

It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."
