No; but you can get a lot of other jobs to not be part of system and be legal .Besides if you falsely qualify as Amish you will give yourself away; if to take many of the government services most Americans take. for granted. Besides there are ways used where you pay no SS; get unearned income at last of year completely tax freep lus housing and food allowances. Heck you even get a free cellphone and service. All legally too.
They would also be guilty of a crime and that is the only reason the IRS will prosecute you, making false statements on a Tax return is a Felony. If that life is so darn great why don't go ahead and jump on in there and start living the high life, don't forget to budget yourself, after all they only pay part of the rent and $200 a month for food is not going to go far even for one person. Get back to us on the new life of luxury you will be leading.
I staed at a bed and breakfast a couple months ago in Amish country! The couple told me that they are exempt from SS Tax on religious grounds! None of the Amish pay it! I've already paid over 90K into the SS system in my lifetime, but am willing to receive no SS if I can bail out now. That 90K will be a gift to Uncle Sam from me. I want nothing in return, just dont want to pay into a system anymore that I am unsure of its future. Are religious grounds the only way to forfeit ones SS rights?
Um, there was a Supreme Court case about exactly this, and the Amish lost. United States v. Lee (1982)
This is a common misconception. On average, they're pulling far more money out through SS and medicare than they paid in. People are living longer, healthcare costs are rising, and old people are a strong voting bloc, so this is no surprise. The system is hopelessly broken.
LOL...antipathy against Social Security is something i will never understand.
In any case, i don't believe most people when they say that they don't wanna pay in or get anything out. And i don't believe most people that claim that they don't pay in either.
Interesting topic. I had heard that clergy could opt out of SS for the pay they receive for their ministry, but I didn't realize that entire religious orders could be exempt.
I found a good summary of the history of the Amish exemption here:
It even links to the IRS form 4029 used to certify the exemption.
One caveat for the OP, though. You'd probably have to get an Amish clergyman to sign your form, and he's not likely to do that just because you stayed at a B&B. It's not a Holiday Inn Express, after all!

Not just capital gains.....self employment is how I do it.
When I was a schedule C self-employed contractor I had to pay 15.3% into the scam. I then incorporated as an S corp and take a modest salary that I get robbed on and the rest isn't subject to thievery.
