I have never met normal, well adjusted parents who homeschool. Almost without fail, those I know of who homeschool have an extremist religious or political agenda, are over-controlling nutbars (like in the case of the article), or conspiracy theorists who rail against "government schools..."
Why is the percentage of unbalanced people who homeschool their kids apparently so high?
How high is it? Show some stats and a reputable study. The truth is, there are wackos in every walk of life. Even people who send their kids to public schools. Heck, there are even teachers in public schools who are wackos and predators.

Sorry, but I do not buy it, nuts can apply to people from any strata of society. The odds are we are talking a teenager that got into trouble, the parents took something away he considered worth more than life itself, you know, like his phone or I-Pad, and that was all it took for him to flip out and kill them. Teens = Under Constrution

Speaking of religious extremists, here's a family in Texas who pulled their kids out of school, ostensibly to home school them, but they actually did no schooling whatsoever. Their reason was that they expected to be raptured soon and didn't see the need to educate their kids.
Its not some family cuddle time where we sit and do nothing AND its also not a Cult 101 or sitting all day in front of books to shove things down them.
When you homeschool, youre allowed to be involved in the school districts activities and sports. You can still do community sports and activities.
So you dont have to be sheltered if you choose not to be.

And I'm sure there are those who make good choices and homeschool appropriately. However, I feel like many homeschoolers I have dealt with a have a screw loose or two...
Yes. I know a couple of families that homeschool. One does so for religious reasons. And one does so because they didn't want their kids leaving the house at 5:30 am and not arrive home until after 7:00 pm, and then do homework all night. Both families have to teach curriculum established by the state, the children are tested periodically to assure they are meeting the benchmarks set by the state, but at the same time, there is much more flexibility in terms of the children learning at their own pace, and in terms of the children exploring subjects that particularly interest them.

and as someone else said, there are many people who arent homeschooled who have a screw loose. The blame always falls on homeschooling because its against the norm.
