(Bloomberg Opinion) -- After two months of what looked like a nascent recovery, the U.S. economy is faltering again. Restaurant reservations, one of the most commonly tracked indicators of local business activity, are stagnating.

What would happen to the country with a 2nd lockdown?

Not accepting it this time. No indeed, and I was fully supportive the original shutdown.

No way after all those medical professionals said protesting was more important that preventing the virus. No way after hearing repeatedly that the protests have nothing to do with the spike we are seeing now. In my state we had been almost fully opened for weeks and the numbers were still going down, until (drum roll) two weeks after the protests began. If any government official thinks people will support destroying people’s livelihood on a mass level to prevent getting the virus after they allowed “the right people” to destroy cities, despite spreading the virus, they are in for a shock. They’re going to get protests, alright.

At this point we should not lock down again. Social distancing and masks (of some form) should be mandate. Open all restaurants, bars, and places of entertainment with these in place. If places are caught in violation, they are shut down temporarily. This should slow the advance of covid enough to avoid a disaster in healthcare while at the same time continuing to increase the people who become immune. No one can afford a lockdown. Take proper precautions until this is largely over.

They tried that in Miami, it has not worked.

Many states have mandated closure of inside dining at restaurants. Of course reservations are down.

What good would a "lockdown" do?

If masks work and social distancing rules are in effect, lockdowns serve no purpose but to disrupt and destroy businesses, lives, jobs and interrupting normalcy in general.

If folks wear masks, and continue social distancing, and limit large group get togethers, this thing can easily be managed.

Could not agree more.

In the suburb we just moved from, there has been no in person school since March and there will be no in person school until at least late September. But the (mostly white) high school kids were out protesting for BLM, and that was just fine and dandy. This is FUBAR.

My children do not need to be protesting. They need to be in school.
