Um...have we ever gotten an explanation for that STUPID, IDIOTIC, JUVENILE regurgitation of every word spoken at one of the meetings? So very irritating and immature. Try and stomach the video, at least til "shelby" ascends the throne.
The debate between public safety and First Amendment rights could be reaching a breaking point in the Occupy Wall Street protests, as police and government officials respond to reports of violence, vandalism, death and illness and seek to shut down some camps.
People are just laughing at them now.
The people and business in close proximity to the camps absolutely HATE them for costing jobs and business.
One of the main reasons this movement is winding down, as a previous poster mentioned, is a lack of organization and a coherent message. OWS may crumble and die but the idea won't. This is just the beginning as there will be more groups to follow. A surprising number of people, when asked, are shocked to find out that they share some of the same concerns as the Occupy crowd. No one that I talk to wants the current corruption in politics and Wall Street to continue. I read a lot of message boards such as this and it seems the general consensus is that there is a problem with our current system and it doesn't matter if you are Republican or Democrat, the system is broken. We can't continue to allow big business to dictate our lives.
I hear a lot of right wingers complain about too much government and that we should just let "the market" determine how businesses should treat people, the environment, and the economy. That philosophy is only a recipe for disaster. We don't elect the board members of companies so we have absolutely no say in their day to day decisions. The only way we can have any say in what these companies do is through our democratically elected officials. Unfortunately, when it comes to finances human nature makes it impossible to self regulate.
You have nailed it pretty well here - lots of drift from the other posters.
* The basic concern and message of the movement is Wall Street influence in govt - pure and simple. There is not just one facet to this problem.
* Deregulation, desired by the Right, is SELF-REGULATION. It fosters mergers and monopolies. How can this be good? Anti-trust has been de-fanged or ignored over 3+ decades. Recently, Citizens United has made the problem worse.
* OWS violence and vandalism is counterproductive and its perpetrators should be treated as enemies of the movement (since their impact is the same).
* The right-wing media is criticizing the youth & immaturity of the demonstrators - yet it is THEIR future.
* The demonstrations may wind down over the winter months, but the "99%" of Americans are now aware and concerned.
Maybe they should've been more like the Tea Party; clean, respectful, obeying the law, making their point and going home.
Oh, and winning elections.
