I could see it happening. Implanted communication devices are a given in the future, just a matter of when. Our brains run on electrical impulses, who's to say that in 100 years you won't just plug into some network that will essentially take over your brain for communication and direction?
We will probably have robots doing 99% of physical labor by then and humans will spend their lives improving their minds and searching for the meaning of their lives.
The darker future could be new legions of slaves with devices implanted in their brains to control their thoughts and actions under the guise of happiness and order.

I think you just described an Occupy gathering...you will be assimilated. Most of them seem to have Iphones surgically attached, have no independant thoughts and move like mindless robots, following the directions of the collective.

Hundreds of thousands of years? maybe a couple of hundred max before humans become redundant/irrelevant and the computer hive mind/mother brain is in full control, just look at how addicted people are to techno devices,we are even being conditioned to think like computers. how long before implants are going to be the norm and how long after that are we going to be subservient slaves to the overmind..
I sometimes think about when all this technological madness started,about the same time as the Roswell incident An air balloon?
A crashing space craft? or a techno bomb that planted the seed to our own destruction, an insidious way for a technological species to get a humanoid species to make more techno bombs to perpetrate its idea of techno life on other planets
