I sort of doubt it but if true they have every right to shoot it out of their airspace.
It's not that I doubt we have drones flying over Iran all the time, I just doubt the Iranians have the ability to bring one down, particularly intact. They aren't that easy to detect.
I doubt our Govt is in the habit of underestimating potential threats.

They are incredibly easy to detect. The RQ-170 is a recon/emit drone. It's simple, just like the lessons learned on how to detect the F-117 and why they're easily shot down now is to look for the flying hole in the sky and/or the spot where all of the electronic signals are coming from/disappear in the middle of the sky. Then lock your missile on to it, and blast it out of the sky. The iranians use "copies" of Russian built S-400 (aka SA-21 Growlers) and the older S-300 (SA-20) surface to air missiles specifically designed to shoot down "stealth" aircraft/systems. The Iranians were provided access/specs/training on the systems and their "copies" since the original sale to them was banned by the UN.
I think that any rivals worthy of the name are already watching us via satellites. And have been for decades. Any country needing to check us out with drones would probably have a real hard time getting them within range of our borders.
Satellites do not enter a nation's airspace, drones do.
Back on page one of this thread it was mentioned that they were able to take over the link between "pilot" and drone via cyberwarfare. I find that hard to believe, but if true, that's a big problem.

I was under the impression they were considerably harder to detect due largely to their minimal mass.

It's already been reported that a keylogger has infiltrated the drone software.
Wonder what our drone was doing in Iran? did I miss that we have declared war on their country ?
Boy, what kind of people are you? Recently arrived from Mars?
A) The US spies on 100+ countries around the world, without declaring war. Intelligence gathering is a constant effort of several agencies.

Let see if there is consistency or hypocrisy in the forum ? If there was a Iran drone in the U S of course you would support it being shot down right? Are we going to war monger Iran for doing the same thing ? HMMMM.
B) Of course the US would intercept any drone or spying device it can. What is hypocritical about that?

That is REALLY stupid! Why would the US spy for another country? Isn't the US interested in what's Iran doing? We are watching every move in Iran via satellites, drones, high altitude flights (U2) and ground observations. We intercept phone conversations and tap into emails.
I have to admit that the UFOs on this forum never cease to amaze me.

Nope. In fact they are quite easy and have been blown out of the sky repeatedly in Iraq and w/ more frequency in Afghanistan. Now the RQ-170's are harder to hit, but not w/ SA missiles. They carry jamming equip & other counter emit systems, but for the systems I mentioned, that only makes it easier. Imagine current gen 'Wild Weasel' system for SA missiles.
Yay, three cheers for the regime that has vowed our nation's destruction and is doing their level best to obtain the means to follow through on their promise!
If there's anything worse than reflexive patriotism, it's reflexive oikophobia.

These are the worst enemies. I only wonder why would anybody live in a country they hate so much?
