they make such statments such as 'the gay lifestyle' being pushed, or 'liberals and THEIR belief that all cultures are equal"... etc.

sorry 1. you're talking to a 34 year old gay virgin here with a degree in religion living in north dakota

and 2. i do NOT LIKE much of the muslim religion. i do NOT believe everything is relative.

lots of conservatives out there who 'other' everyone in a tone making them out to be a tribal enemy and the try to make statements as though everyone in that group Is EXACTLY ALIKE and does EVERYTHING THE SAME and all THINK the same.

not too many gay people do this to straight people, not too many liberals (though some do) do this to religion.

when i say something about christianity i don't like i say MANY FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIANS.

fundamentalist christianity ironically is one of the few groups that DOES COME CLOSE to monolothic thinking and beliefs and they even have them stated in pamphlets and online.

but notice i use the word FUNDAMENTALIST and don't say ALL CHRISTIANS and i also use the term MANY because i'm sure there are even some exceptions among fundamentalists.

the conservatives that do this, which is many of them, need to stop demonizing people and making us SCARY to other people.. it leads to loss of civil rights and violence.

You're just more verbose, simple as that.

I don't think its confined just to conservatives. Liberals do this too. But I do think its more common among conservatives than liberals. Maybe because most liberals are alot less authoritarian and tribalistic. I think that's the real reason. The simplistic black-and-white thinking is more a conservative value, and being OK with ambiguity and uncertainty is seen as waffling or being indecisive.

Treating gays as a monolithic group isn't just a problem for conservatives, some gays do that themselves by having an overly politicized outlook on what it means to be gay or straight. Alot of gay men assume that everybody else that's gay should be just as sexualized and self-absorbed as themselves, just because that's the dominant culture they have encountered.

Human beings are tribal. If we can define someone as being from "outside" of our own circle, it becomes that much easier to justify hatred, a lack of empathy, even violence against "them". Making the effort to recognize our common humanity would seem to be too much work for some people.

The Paranoid Style in American Politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
The paranoid spokesman, sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms — he traffics in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values. He is always manning the barricades of civilization . . . he does not see social conflict as something to be mediated and compromised, in the manner of the working politician.
It's been known for decades.
