A few months ago the Obama admin announced its new 'We the People" website. Anyone could start an online petition, and if it met the threshold (I think 5000 sigs in a month) it would get attention from the admin. Even Obama himself would have a look. Immediately the top issue was marijuana legalization. But according to the LA Weekly the issue was 'blown off' by the admin. Marijuana Legalization Petition Gets Blown Off by Obama Administration - Los Angeles News - The Informer
Ah well, we'll have to wait for the next black, liberal prez, concludes the LA Weekly.
Jacob Sullum, longtime anti-nannyist, pro-legalization specialist for Reason Magazine (Reason is funded by the evil Koch Bros...for all you anti-Koch OWS'ers) describes in detail the many disappointments of this admin for anti-drug-war advocates. Obama campaigned for US Senate in 2004 as an anti-drug warrior but slowly evolved. Bummer - Reason Magazine
The kicker for me is ObamaCare. Personally if I were dictator, I'd legalize all drugs from heroin to marijuana for consenting adults. It's none of my concern what you ingest into your body. But ONLY if I am not required to pay for the resulting health problems. The further we move towards socialized health care, the less linclined I am to support removal of restrictions placed on harmful substances.
Call it the Higgs effect, after economist Robert Higgs who said We can have a free society or a welfare state. We cannot have both. Legalization of marijuana barely has the support of half the population as it is, and I think as more people wake up to this implication of ObamaCare, legalization will become a dead letter.
The "war on drugs" has a life of its own and it's NOT about fighting drugs.
Legalizing pot is not in the best interests of those fighting the "war on drugs".

the war on drugs is in place so the CIA can continue to control the drug market.
