The article really tells us nothing about WHY Germany is able to produce cars and pay higher wages... it just says that they do. I was hoping for some substance and all I got was smoke.
You might want to compare what those German workers make AFTER paying through the nose in German taxes. You'll be surprised.
Dude, Germany sells their cars to RICH people! Get it? They cost a ton more than what many could afford for a damn car. So add it up, they sell twice as many for twice the damn cost. Where's the mystery here?
They're expensive because it is EXTREMELY expensive to do business in Germany, not because they're looking to necessarily pad their pockets full of excess cash. The Germans like exporting and employing Germans....Americans love importing and employing foreigners. Get it?
And I've owned German cars off and on since 1984...just bought a new one back in 2008. I'm far from rich.

They make very nice money after taxes. They live good, take 6 week vacations yearly, and give out copious amounts of maternity leave. I lived there and supervised local nationals 8 out of the 11 years i worked for Engineering and Housing in Darmstadt, Germany.
Still, they get something for their taxes, so they don't complain.
It's as simple as that. Germans could close plants and move production to other nations just like we do. But they aren't dirtbag corporatists like we have here. They've found a way to make nice profits, provide generous benefits to their employees, pay their taxes, and keep a clean country filled with happy long term employees. They also look beyond the next quarter's profit sheets.
That's the kind of stuff that makes American CEO's heads explode.
Actualy , I was talking about the German consumer.
The statistics in the article compare BMW, Mercedes, and VW to the aggregate US auto industry. It is a bit disingenuous to skew Germany's auto production by including 2/3 luxury manufacturers while not keeping the percentage of luxury car production the same for the US numbers.
OP - do you have the same statistics when comparing US luxury cars to German luxury cars and US economy cars to German economy cars?
IF we are going to debate, lets compare apples to apples with the base numbers first.
Dude, really? A BMW or Mercedes at a more reasonable price than an American car? LMAO! Hell, VW's are more expensive than most US made cars, and more expensive to fix/maintain.
VW's are very reasonable. Sorry, but you're dead wrong.
Quality wise, they're no better than most American brands. They have a better factory warranty on average. And the resale on VW's isn't very good either.

Well, that's true too....to a degree. When i left Germany, attitudes had changed profoundly about buying foreign marques. They're far more willing to do so a lot more than they were in the past.
Besides, foreign countries can't dump sh*tloads of foreign cars in Germany. Germany protects its industries.

I cant fault em for that.
