The minimum wage should be localized and tied to the cost of living. It should be illegal to employ someone for less than the cost of securing food, shelter, clothing and transportation. Didn't we fight a war to end slavery?
They applied for that job. There's no slavery. Why stay there for years and have a family to boot and think you can lead a middle class lifestyle ?
Why are people 30-40 years old with families flipping burgers ?
And these are not the temp out of work people..they will leave once they find a better job. These are the unskilled that are just "there" and stay there.
The very simple fact is that the business organization is organized and labor is not organized. This gives the employer the upper-hand in dictating wages. It's precisely why wages have fallen since fewer workers are unionized. The minimum wage is absolutely necessary to protect desperate people.
Fail. You speak of "the business organization" as if there is only one employer available to buy the labor of each worker. If fact, there are millions of employers in this country, and they are definitely not organized on the labor market. I've been to Chamber of Commerce meetings, and "employee wage setting" is never on the agenda.
If a company does not pay enough, workers do not show up. If workers show up, voluntarily, they are getting paid enough. It is not possible to pay employees less than the market value of their labor, otherwise they would quit.
Wal Mart will then raise their prices to meet these new expenses and those working for them are still in the same boat they were because that extra money they make is going towards purchasing the same products that just cost more. You could make the minimum wage $100 a hour and they will still have the same buying power they had before.
If walmart has to raise their prices, then this would be a good thing, because then, they would have to compete with other retail chains that are not relying on the government to fill in the gap via food stamps etc.
Give people more money and that is more money circulating in the economy to buy stuff.
As it is now, were headed the opposite direction, where due to the cost of living increases, people are having a harder time making ends meet.
Were in a race to the bottom as it is, and to change course, we need to go the other way.

Prices going up is a nice solution, but then you haven't improved the quality of life for minimum wage earners. You've just increased the numbers on both ends.

Yeah. That was my point, which is why I said that it would cause "problems for a lot more people."
Ah. America.
The land where people care more about the cost of their fatty burgers than others in society.
You would think that's the case.... but then you travel and see that Americans cares quite a bit about other members of their society than folks in many other countries.
