A bipartisan group of senators led by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today introduced a bill to save our nation billions of dollars by eliminating the wasteful, inefficient $1 note. The Currency Optimization, Innovation and National Savings (COINS) Act calls for a transition to the more economical and environmentally friendly dollar coin, a change that the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has been advocating for more than two decades to help reduce government waste.
I hope that Americans will come to their senses and replace the dollar bill with a dollar coin. If you don't think it's a good idea, tell me why. I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages by far.
It is a good idea. I would extend it to the $5, $10 and $20 as well.
I think it would be good to start with the dollar coin and maybe increase production of $2 bills, eventually replacing those with coins too.
