It's sad, but Merkel was rather tactless. That has consequence too. It's true that Greeks do need to take stock of themselves, but the sucking sound of losing their identity as a nation... that part of EURO needs to be fixed. The French were rather vicious in their satire towards Germany as well.
But are we really all that different? Globalization has a down side and throwing the doors wide open leaves people feeling too vulnerable. Those fears have born out for all. Purist isolationist policies aren't wise, but neither is abandoning the role of stewardship of a sovereigns best interest. That's why I could never get behind Libertarians all that much. Nothing takes care of itself. It never did, and it never does.
Ground zero- they never hammered out true boundaries with this currency. Greece, and Germany, and France, all... are any one of them empowered to make discrete actions in house to genuinely take control of their own destiny? Or has this agreement tied their hands behind their backs hobbling them from swimming? That appears to be the case.
They're responding to incompetence and obtuse people. They're doing it in an obtuse way. Too exasperated.
Instead of raging against the Germans the Greeks should look in the mirror and be mad at themselves. They are the ones that showed up waving Greek flags and voted for the leaders that lead them where they are today. Democracy has worked well for the Greeks they voted for all the goodies and now have a unelected bankster in charge.
A) The Greeks crawl to Germany for bailouts on their hands and knees not once, but twice.
B) The Germans expect the Greeks to become responsible.
C) The Greeks say "F*** YOU!".
Sounds a lot like our recipient classes attitude toward the rich.
You noticed that too, eh?
The Greeks have no one to blame but themselves. The Germans are only guilty of being stupid enough to let the Greeks into the Euro.
On a lighter note, its nice to see something other than Old Glory being torched.
