I used to get detention for wearing sneakers when they weren't allowed. Uniforms serve a purpose in giving the kids harmless rules to break, so they don't have to do more serious stuff wrong. I loved to walk around knowing I was breaking a rule, and playing little games to try not to get caught. Unless the school was overly punitive, you'd have found other reasons to resent them if the uniform had been removed, most likely.
