I most certainly consider shooting animals for sport murder - as only human arrogance would deem us having an exclusive right to life and liberty. My perspective (on higher animals) has always been that there - but for the luck of the draw - go I. And I reverse the roles asking myself how would I feel about being hunted for sport. The immorality is clear.
Shooting to eat is different, though not something I would ever do. I don't call it murder, but I do call it unnecessary. In most cases these days I think there's a sport element involved even if the animal is consumed and it is barbarism that we should strive to rise above.
so animals have the same rights as humans now? how quaint..........
Yes, CrownVic, children and adults too have accidents and often die from them. That's why driving should be against the law. Car accidents cause way more fatalities than gun accidents.
goverments cause more death and murder than privately owned firearms. maybe we should ban goverments too.
a well-maintained firearm with which you are proficient is just a single piece of the puzzle. further, even if you are proficient and have a well-maintained firearm, your safety is not guaranteed.
so yes, technically, you can give your family "any kind of safety," even without a firearm. the anecdotal evidence on this forum alone proves that some level of safety is possible without one.
still, the evidence also supports that having a firearm has definitely provided safety and security to many people in a crisis, often a crisis in which not having a firearm would have contributed to a far worse outcome, if not outright tragedy.
i prefer to have a firearm, both for sporting and security measures. but i don't pretend that having a firearm is the only security i need, or that it makes me impervious to robbery, murder or other types of abuse. it is just one more tool in my toolkit that i use to provide security for my family, along with locked doors, a family dog, a knife on my belt, a cell phone, living in a good neighborhood, etc. none of those, even all together, guarantee my safety and security, but they all add up to even the odds a bit in my favor.
Without a firearm or weapon, you are as good as toast.
You come back after you your wife, have been robbed, rapped, car jacked and ask the same question. Criminals feed on the weak, helpless. They don't seem to rob or carjack police in uniforms, or a 350lb guy. The 100lbs, elderly, etc. is what they target.

Are you a liberal by chance?
I'm liberal and I am open to the concept of having a gun for self-defense. Don't assume that someone is liberal or conservative just because of their stance on one topic.
It might be a "Wise choice" to have a gun if the criminal coming after you made an "Unwise choice".
