I find that my tendency to support one candidate over another changes according to what I perceive as the most pressing problems facing the country.
Going into the presidential election 2008 my biggest concern was the wars we were fighting in the middle east. Given the choice between John McCain and Barack Obama, I felt that if anyone would avoid putting American lives at stake if possible, it would be John McCain. Then we had the economic meltdown and bailouts and that was when the GOP lost me, as I did not agree at all with the bank bailouts.
Any chance of me voting for McCain was wiped out when he chose his running mate. Since then I find that social issues are of the biggest concern to me and have been along with the economy. However if something big changes on the world or national scene that could change for me again.
Toss-up between social and foreign policy. I could care less about religion.
Since both Dems and Reps are just as likely to be big-government and big spenders (in fact, Reps a little more so) and both parties have very similar fiscal policies, I vote Democrat.
They all matter to me (except their religious preference). How extreme they are in either direction on any of those issues would be the biggest factor in how I vote.

What I think of them as a person, whether I believe they're 'real' and trustworthy. e.g.: I've seen interviews with Jim Webb and liked him even though I know very little about his politics and religion, same goes for Jon Huntsman, I'm sorry he wasn't a stronger candidate.
