D.C. archdiocese: Denying Communion to lesbian at funeral was against ‘policy’ - The Washington Post

On the one hand, I can understand her grief. On the other, if this particular church does not agree with homosexuality, should they be forced to give someone communion?

Also, who put this funeral together? Why didn't they make sure they had a tolerant church/priest for this funeral?

There's a time and a place to make your political point.
The greatest moment of grief in someone's life isn't it.

That being said, how the hell did her sexuality even come up at a funeral?

Good questions. Communion at a funeral..unless she takes it regularly why does it matter now?

Her partner was there helping out ahead of time. They asked who she was. She said she was "Her partner" and it apparently went downhill from there.

But was this a political point?

If gay people ask that their rights be respected and that the church should have no say in how they live their life, I agree 100%.

BUT, can you also turn around and say that the church should also accomodate you? Should gays have a say in how churches run their church?

If it's against the Churches policy then yes.

Archdiocese officials at first issued a short statement saying that the priest’s actions were against “policy†and that they would look into it as a personnel issue.

A representative of the diocese apologized--the problem was with the individual priest. I'm not catholic myself, but my husband's family is. You have zero control over which priest you get for anything.

I'm sure she has a civil rights attorney on speed dial.

I hope not. It was a sick and sad thing to do, but dragging this out all over court and making giant mayhem over it is just...ugh.

That's religion for you. The sooner people get rid of it, the better.
