Thanks for the comments.
One thing I love about forums is that it's a combination of many unique people with distinct perspectives.

How does one "change a society?" I sure don't know, and it really can't be done from the outside.
Go to any Third World "city" with its sprawling slums and see if you can come up with a better answer, I sure can't.
That's the idea that Greg Mortenson had - to educate girls (future mothers of all) in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He seemed careful to understand & respect the culture regarding this education.

2012 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and Statistics by World Hunger Education Service

There are various causes of world poverty like:
1. Natural Disasters
2. Debt - Most LEDC's (Less Economically Developed Countries) must borrow money from banks of developed countries to begin their own development.
3. War
4. Unfair Trade - Developed countries set the prices and terms they will pay for LEDC products. To get more to pay off debt etc, cash crops (like tobacco, coffee & cotton) are planted instead of food crops.
5. Corruption - food & resources may not make it to those in most need.
6. HIV/AIDS
7. Lack of Education

What can we do, big or small steps, to improve conditions for those who struggle with hunger?

Let'em starve. Feeding them is like feeding pidgeons. The more you give today the more that will come back tomorrow.

I agree.
I believe that the root of evil is ignor-ance.
So I believe the solution is education, in one shape or form, or another.

The pursuit of GOoDness, may be like the characters pursued in Wizard of Oz...
1. Heart
2. Brain
3. Courage

And...
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can & wisdom to know the difference."

Is that your approach with raising children?
Actually, maybe that's not such a bad idea.

Come on! Think about when you were sick... felt like a train wreck... did you feel motivated & ready to fight the injustices of the world? Sometimes we need help. As infants, our lives depended on help. I understand the idea, "Give a man a fish he eats for a day, Teach him to fish & he eats for a lifetime." As I mentioned, I believe most passionately in education - not just for the "poor" but for others who are in positions of influence regarding the poor.

Since world poverty has so many unique circumstances and causes, one of the only generalizations that could be made in what we can do is:

Be aware... & live consciously.
Realize what you spend your money on, where you work, how much energy you use or waste, who & what you vote for... all have some type of influence on others - sometimes people you'll never meet in your life.

Nothing. Most of these problems are caused by he governments of the affected people. We have shown no ability to affect the operations of any governments. It s tragically sad, but out side of charity, there are no systemic changes that we can influence that will amount to anything.

How does HIV/AIDS make people hungry?
