I was always under the impression, the only thing the 1st amendment guaranteed you was being free from prosecution by the goverment. Where does it say in the 1st amendment, that if you express your views you can't get criticism from the public, or your employer can't fire you because they disagree with your opinion. I'll give you an example, Ozzie Guillen said in a recent Time magazine article that he loved Castro. If he truly feels that way, It's his right to feel that way. Why shouldn't he receive criticism if that comment offends people, or the Marlins fire him because they disagree with his position. If you want to speak your mind, that's ok, but that doesn't mean you are free from any consequences that comes with your opinion. I guess my quetsion is, why do people feel you shouldn't receive criticism for you opinons if it offends people?
Of course you are completely correct. How it is that so many Americans are completely in the dark about just what the 1st ammemdent does for them is just nuts. It makes the country appear like a nation of morons. Even you failed candidate for VP does not have a single clue what freedom of speech is. That however is expected from complete idiots!!!!

It seems to me that many people try to abuse Free Speech, always trying to push the limits and to find out what antisocial statements they can get away with.
But at the end of the day free speech exists everywhere. The only difference is the limit of what you can say before you get into trouble. In the US you are not free to say anything, either. People might sue you for insulting them, libel, and what not...

People who don't understand that the concept of Free Speech is a general restraint on government limits on speech are just plain ignorant.

LOL, I just listened to her a couple of times and that was enough to make a pretty good determination. As for those stupid Americans....... Have you ever read the stats about the % of Americans that don't know the most basic things there are about their own country??? It's just mind blowing the extent of the ignorance. I don't know who's to blame for it. Maybe the education system??? Maybe a lot of Americans just don't care about how things work.
