The Heritage foundation Conservative Policy Research and Analysis was in full support of the individual mandate because it would increase profits of insurance companies.

FLASHBACK 2007: Romney Praises Heritage Foundation, touts health care reform - YouTube

Now that it is embraced by Democrats, they back peddled.

Why? Did they not understand it was unconstitutional?

Quote:
When George H.W. Bush was president, he came up with this crazy idea on how to improve our health care system.

H.W. Bush had this radical plan to propose an individual health care mandate to bring down health care costs by forcing every American citizen to purchase insurance because the uninsured raise the cost for everyone else. This would also end pre-existing conditions.

The Heritage Foundation supported and even helped write H.W. Bush's bill with an individual mandate. Today they are one of many conservative groups fighting the current mandate.
Republicans Supported an Individual Mandate Until Obama Did.

It's older than that. The mandate was the Republican alternative to the proposed Clinton reforms in the early '90s. It was their way of making sure every American had skin in the game and didnt free load. Now they can't run away from it fast enough.

I think it was a bad idea no matter which side is pushing it.

And it would have been challenged in Court then as well. This is moot a point.

You can't fix HC in this country w/o the gov't getting heavily involved. If you think it's a bad idea, then you don't want to fix HC in this country. It's the best market-based solution Republicans could think of. It's the solution that insurance companies lobbied for.

Okay, then what is the new alternative now that Republicans hate their previous answer? And vouchers or healthcare savings accounts are not viable alternatives.

Will leave us no choice but to convert to a full Universal Healthcare system.

Newt loved it as well

Newt Gingrich Supported an Individual Mandate as Recently as May 2009 - Conor Friedersdorf - Politics - The Atlantic

That's the funny thing, when the GOP proposes it, they love it. When the dems propose the same thing, it's some god awful horrible thing What a bunch of damn hypocrites.

That's funny, I've read your post twice and I can't seem to find your comments about Obama himself publicly opposing the mandate before he supported it. You wouldn't be ignoring Obam's flipflopping in your rush to accuse the Republicans of doing it, now would you?
