Prosecute Wal-Mart, but get rid of anti-bribery law - CNN.com

Quote:
Corruption is a huge problem in many countries, especially the developing world. Much of the corruption, however, arises from excessive government that hurts economic productivity and creates the incentive to pay bribes. The best solution is to scale back these aspects of government. Since that is not always possible, however, it is better to allow companies from the United States and other rich countries to pay the bribes that diminish the negative impact of excessive government.
No need to follow the law if you're rich, apparently. I'm inclined to believe that we would never allow this if the roles were reversed: if, say, Bayer (just an example) paid the FDA to simply turn a blind eye where U.S. pharmaceutical standards are concerned (going beyond "legalized bribery"/lobbying).

What does everyone here think? Is bribery acceptable if government is "too onerous"?

Bayer made gas that killed folks for nazi germany. I don't want them running the FEMA camps when the time comes. Just kidding. In the US its called lobbyists who bribe the voters (congress) with trips and corporate junkets and conferences in hawaii or cancun and who knows what else.

Zyclon B, the gas that was used in the camps. What is so ironic about this gas is it was created by a Jew. He had no idea of its future, for it was originally made as an insecticide. He, Fritz Haber, also invented mustard gas.

Not very bright people here... the bribery exists in third world countries because of the government's stranglehold over everything over there... simply put, you cannot do business over there without bribing MULTIPLE government officials and employees... its a way of life over there... Walmart, like many other corporations do not have a choice if they want to do business over there... I still remember having to bribe airport security when I go to third world nations so they don't give me a hard time and waste hours while I am trying to get through... do you think Walmart wants to bribe officials over there? I think people are really stupid when they pretend to not understand the dynamics of foreign governments...

If the issue at stake here is bribery why would any bussiness owner want to participate? If a business is willing to bribe to increase profit what else are they willing to do? The excuse is lame and a question for the stockholders. How can you believe anything MGT. says?

If you think about it their method of Payola is far more efficient than us providing "legitimzed" payola to Washington

How do you bribe a politician to increase your profit? They bribed to be able to set up shop... Is the politician going to force you to buy health insurance? Or are you suggesting that Health Insurance lobbyists didn't contribute anything to that?

No, the issue here is you can't do Business in Mexico without bribing the locals and Mexico doesn't reform that issue.
If you want to do business in Mexico, you have to bribe some, no way around it.

Even here in the USA the local cities and counties screw businesses looking to do their thing by making them donate some of their land, force donations to a city or whatever. What is really the difference between the one kind of bribe in Mexico and the crap we have going on here?

How foolish we look going after a job maker over things our own local
governments do at home daily.
