Frankly, there should be no reason why females would go to a gay club to have a bachelorette party, but some ladies thought it was a fun place to go.

The owner now forbids straight bachelorette parties until gays can marry.

However, this is clearly a violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Law in the State of California. I wonder if there are any attorneys who want to make a name for themselves that will come forward to challenge the owner based on California's sexual orientation discrimination laws.

Quote:
The famed West Hollywood watering hole The Abbey is getting into the same-sex marriage fight, by banning bachelorettes from celebrating their upcoming nuptials at the bar until marriage equality is reached.

It is illegal in the State of California to discriminate based on sexual orientation, marriage status in any establishment.

Quote:
The Unruh Civil Rights Act is a piece of California legislation that specifically outlaws discrimination based on age,[1][2] sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status, or sexual orientation.[3] This law applies to all businesses, including but not limited to hotels and motel, restaurants, theaters, hospitals, barber and beauty shops, housing accommodations, and retail establishments.[4] This law was enacted in 1959, and was named for the author Jesse M. Unruh. The Unruh Civil Rights Act is codified as California Civil Code section 51.

Good for them. It's a private business so they can do what they want. Why is this news, aside from more gay bashing?

So they take their business somewhere else. I'm sure they will find a new venue for their fun. And some other business will be getting their money.

Because it's national news, it's controversial considering the people involved want to limit the rights of others because they can't have what they want.

It's obvious that they're not welcome. Why celebrate upcoming heterosexual nuptials in a location surrounded by patrons who don't welcome you?

Straight women not welcome in a gay club? I take it you've never been to a gay club.

And every time I've been to a gay strip club, there have been at least as many women in there as men - very often part of a bachelorette party.

Not allowing bachelorette parties at a private club is denying people rights?

Why should the primary clientele of a business have to have people celebrating something that clientele can't have right in front of them?

Many straight women love gay men. Good looking, smart, successful, and they don't have to worry about getting hit on. As Hammer said, there are often as many straight women as there are gay men at those clubs.

Bartenders/dancers at gay clubs are usually very attractive and fun to be around. Why wouldn't your typical straight woman want some eye candy during a night on the town with their gay friends?
