Jack Hayes, the director of the National Weather Service, stepped down Friday in response to an investigation that top officials at the weather service had misappropriated $43.8 million by giving bonuses and extensions to contractors without proper justification.
U.S. News - Report: National Weather Service misappropriated $43 million

Is it time to get rid of the National Weather Service? Couldn't private companies do everything that they're doing?

What a screwed up government we have. Took anonymous complaints (notice the plural) with probably a threat to go public.

And going back as far as 2008 ? Do these people NOT do annual audits ? Does Snowe NOT oversee and check being the senior member of the subcommittee ?

What the hell are they doing up there in DC that this stuff goes unchecked for years and ignored as long as the public doesn't get wind of it ?

I think as the scope of government has increased, actual oversight becomes almost impossible.

As a conservative, this may sound surprising. But the most legitimate roles of government include defense and safety. NWS is almost a necessary safety coordinator (especially in the case of hurricanes).

You make good argument for eliminating most government functions with that statement.

Well if the government is contracting out then the private companies ARE doing the work.
