Well.... so much for assimilation, that turned out to be nothing but a big joke. Now the candidates running for office are expected to be fluent in Spanish.
I sure hope Ted Cruz wins against Dewhurst. The pandering to immigrants who refuse to learn the language of this country is getting more and more absurd. Arriba Cruz, abajo Dewhurst!
Cruz, the son of a Cuban immigrant, expressed doubts to Univision about a Spanish-only debate, saying he isn't fluent and grew up speaking a mix of Spanish and English.
"I think we would have a better debate if it were in English," Cruz said. "Most Texans speak English. Now, after skipping 35 debates all over the state of Texas, suddenly Dewhurst wants to debate in Spanish?"
And why shouldn't he be elected? He's not running for office in Mexico, he's running for office in an English speaking nation.
Newsflash - other languages besides English are spoken in the United States.
I think that Dew-whatever his name is tactic is brilliant. He is going to get the Spanish speakers vote and Cruz will have to wait till the next election - because he isn't prepared. He can use the time to be become fluent in Spanish.
Look....SPANISH speakers have voting power. Purchasing POWER.
So people will be accommodated....it's all about business.
Don't like it? Don't watch the debate on Univision. Very simple.
And let people practice their first amendment rights.
This is THE ONLY country on earth where people have a problem with other languages being spoken. Such arrogance.
Most other countries have official languages. I gather that you are strongly against the idea of establishing an official language, right? So it seems you're a bit hypocritical in your "agreement" with those in other countries on this issue.

So, all those people in other countries learning english are 'swallowing their pride?' I bet they'd like to know that's what you think.
The U.S. is an english speaking country. People who WANT to come to the U.S. learn english, usually BEFORE they come to the U.S. There's no reason for a couple of candidates for U.S. Senate should have a reason to debate in the language of a foreign country. None of them will be voting for said candidates.
So, why would anyone have a problem with a Senator speaking in the common language of communications in a country in which they wish to be a Senator, in a NATIONAL body of politic?

We don't need an Official Language.
We all know English is the language use to run our government and business.
We are the United States of America, and is foolish to COMPARE us to other countries.

And how many of those languages would you suspect are spoken in the U.S. Senate? Quick... give us another NEWSFLASH ! ! !

That is shameful that Cruz does not speak spanish. He is the son of cuban immigrants after all. I agree that the republicans shouldn't debate in spanish since it goes against everything that they preach. Immigrants that come to this country really need to learn and speak english.
