Private property works both ways. If this man wants to hold a church ON HIS PROPERTY, then what right should the GOVERNMENT and their zoning "regulations" have to say he can't? Private property is just that: should be without government interference. The only reason for private property to have government intervention is if someone is being harmed or the house is grossly unsafe, which I'm pretty sure this house was not grossly unsafe. Why does he even NEED a permit to start a church on, let me emphasize this again, HIS PRIVATE PROPERTY?!
The prosecutor's insane. He wants to make a man spend 2 1/2 years, a long time, in prison and make him a convicted felon all for some "regulation" bull? In a perfect world, that prosecutor should be disbarred for even trying to get that sentence. But we don't live in a perfect world.
Yet another that join the thread without reading thru the thread and knowing the facts.
The property is owned by the church. His private property, NOT.
they are in violation of zoning and building codes put in place to protect everyone. Nobody has an unlimited right to do anything they want with their property. Compliance with the law protects the neighbors AND the members of the church (visitors to the property). Once the city is aware of violations they are required by law to act.
You gotta ask yourself, why is this guy choosing to ignore the law and NOT doing the things he needs to do to comply with the law?

They never said he can't. They just said his church building has to be constructed up to basic code like every other church or building used for regular assemblies of 80+ people.

In that spirit, I hope the property owner closest to your residential home converts his property into a pig farm (or an oil refinery, or a smelting outfit, or a sewage treatment facility).

This man was not charged with or convicted of any felonies. Well, for this incident at least. He's already a convicted felon for past actions (drive-by shooting - he fired 5 bullets into a house and nearly killed a women).
Because his private property is next to others private property ...... Your right, our does work both ways ..... He needs to to respect the property rights of those around him and the rules and regulations that existed and are fully disclosed when buying a property
This guy tried to offset his lack of funds our ability to do things the right way with abject stupidity and belligerence ..... The final outcome is not unexpected
Social media and blog posts are hardly factual, although they do serve the purpose of firing up masses of people who are totally unaware of the reasons why this "pastor" has run afoul of the law. The victim card is a crafty attempt, and has obviously generated a massive stir among "attack on christianity" conspiracy theorists, but the only thing that this pastor is a victim of, is his own stupid actions.

Not sure about the lack of funds being an issue between the church, him and his wife they own several million dollars in real estate. I think the issue is the regulations are difficult to comply with based on the size and configuration of his property. The "church building", Chapel, if you will, needs to be the primary use, or the largest building on the lot, if he wants It to be a church. With a 4000 house on the lot, he needs the chapel to be 4000 sq ft. With a 4000 sq ft chapel he needs one parking space for each three ppl of the occupancy capacity for a 4000 sq ft building. He doesn't have enuf land to provide the parking for that 1 to 3 ratio. One of his challenges to the law is that he wants a 1 to 5 parking ratio. He is caught in a catch 22. If he builds a chapel based on how much parking space he has the chapel would be smaller than the house and would NOT comply with the principal use provisions of the law.
Believe me, he has options to get legal but hasn't taken them. That is why he is going to jail.
Sorry about that. I didn't test it and then got sidetracked with work I guess it was already posted anyway.
Why people don't seem to be willing to read it is another story...
