Everyone in our family was raised with a healthy respect for firearms. Many of us are avid hunters who own several guns each. My father probably owns 20 guns, some dating back to his boyhood, that he saves. He has a few that he just uses for target practice as a hobby, but are not useful for hunting. He is a 91 yr old retired WWII vet, who has been a registered Republican for almost his whole life.

None of us would ever give up the right to own the guns we have. Most of us support the NRA.

HOWEVER, not one of us owns or condones assault rifles. Some even think they should be illegal. They are illegal to use in any kind of hunting, and they are relatively useless as a 'hobby gun'. There is no GOOD reason to have one unless you are in the military, or on a swat team or something. Those most lethal guns are largely owned and used by the least rational of gun owners.
.
Had the shooter had a more conventional weapon would so many have died? How many mass shootings will it take to convince people that tightening up access to this particular weapon is the right thing to do?

IMO, the more killings like this that take place the stronger the outcry for gun control will be, and maybe for tougher laws than are called for now. Would it be wise for the NRA to be proactive in taking a tougher stance on the assault weapons at this time, than to potentially end up with more blood on their hands if these types of crimes continue?

Great question. I've been wondering the same thing.

Does anyone know if the NRA has any solutions to decrease the amount of gun violence in the U.S., or does the NRA just believe that violent deaths are the price we have to pay for our freedom to own guns?

Please define "Assault Rifle" and how it is any different my or your hunting rifle ? They are both semi-automatic and fire as rapidly as I can pull a trigger. I can reload in seconds.

Be careful when you describe something as an assault rifle. That can be construed to be just about any gun you or I own.

I guess you do know that "Assault Weapons" are fully automatic and thus very expensive Class III weapons that are difficult to obtain.

...or do you mean self loading rifles that fire one bullet each time you pull the trigger and have a detachable magazine or even an Evil Bayonet Lug.

I have a question for you. How many violent crimes are committed each year with this type of weapon in the US?

Most of the answers lie in the problems of inner city minority neighborhoods. What can the NRA do that our Federal or State Govts not do about the murders and violence ?

I would think they could do something other than shout, "Every man, woman and child in America should be armed!"

Does the NRA believe in any restraint on gun ownership? Or do they believe that even babies should be able to own a gun?

I am a gun owner and like you disagree with much of what the NRA does with their fear mongering.
Where we probibly disagree is that I dont belive in punishing law abiding citizens due to the acts of criminals.
I dont blame the gun, the manufacturer or society as a whole. The blame and the R rests upon the shoilders of the criminal.

I used to have a Colt semi-automatic 22 rifle. very ordinary and average hunting type rifle. though I never used it for hunting just for shooting cans and bottles in the mountains. my rifle was semi-auto but could not be practically fired as fast as you can pull the trigger. as is common with this type of weapon, there is a huge recoil when it is fired. so if you were to pull the trigger as fast as you can the recoil would probably break your shoulder. if you were to hold this rifle at waist level and try to fire it like an assault rifle the recoil would probably break your hand.

the point being, just because a weapon is semi-automatic does not mean it can be fired 'as fast as you can pull the trigger.' you can do that only with an assault type weapon or a semi-automatic handgun specifically designed to be fired in that manner.

and also assault rifles usually have magazines. with the rifle I had you had to reload the bullets one at a time. once you run out of bullets it will take you several minutes to reload. but on a gun with a magazine its just a matter of seconds to reload.
