I don't know what it means. Multi-ethnic-ism is a good thing, but multi-culturalism implies that people of different races or ethnicities have different cultures, which is not necessarily the case. In fact, people of the same race can have different cultures.
So please explain what you mean by multi-culturalism.
I dislike it and think it should be left up to the states.
Multiculturalism doesn't start at a state level, and it can't be mandated from a federal level. It starts at home - with teaching our children to respect and appreciate other cultures and people.
As already stated, the OP should make it clear on how he/she defines and understands multiculturalism because not everyone defines it in the same way.
The way I see it America has always been a place where people of different backgrounds meet and people get exposed to virtually every custom and tradition the world has to offer.
Whether you feel its good or bad, that's how its been for centuries.
In your view is this good or bad, and please go into detail as to why you think so?
We can't "go into detail" until you do. What do you mean by "multiculturalism"? Are you talking about a school curriculum? Equal access to education? Immigration issues? A diverse population? What is the "this" that we are to discuss, and why do you think it would have the qualities of "good" and "bad"? You need to give us something to work with. This is potentially a good topic, but it's not clear what you want to be discussed. Please define your terms and elaborate on your idea. Refer to the TOS for "Great Debates" for some general guidance on setting up OP's here.
I think it's just a fantastic and great and wonderful thing.
My reasons for thinking that are very simple and pretty much irrefutable. I was born and raised in downtown Toronto at a time when it was 90% or higher White European and of that mostly Anglo. There really was nothing much wrong with that but it was a boring culture to say the least. Fast forward 50 years and we now have a Toronto that is vibrant, exciting, interesting and mulitcultural. All aspects of the culture are just 100 times better than they used to be. I have to say that for me personally, the worst thing about the lack of diversity was the lack of interesting choices in cuisine. When I was a kid we thought spaghetti was ethnic. LOL.
