Why Romney's Numbers Aren't Dropping | The New Republic
This does seem to be a "khaki election": despite the political equivalent of the Somme, Ypres and Verdun, the lines aren't moving. Millions are expended like 18pdr shells for a gain measurable in yards, but the high commands are still hoping for the "big breakthrough", even if, like von Moltke in 1914, the Romney generals are showing some signs of nervous breakdown lately.
So, it's attrition warfare until both sides are bled white; except instead of an Armistice at 1100 on the 11th of November, it'll be a general collapse by one or the other exhausted sides on the 3rd.
Which raises a question. Should Obama emerge from "the mud and the blood to the green fields beyond", will the GOP base, like the German people after 1918, cry "stab in the back"? And if so, who will be their scapegoat? Because, after all, we know there has to be one.
