FT.com / Middle East & North Africa - Pentagon sees Libya military costs soar

Quote:
US military operations in Libya are on course to cost hundreds of millions of dollars more than the Pentagon estimated, according to figures obtained by the Financial Times.

The pace of spending is higher than reported by the DoD comptroller’s office in late March. In a congressional hearing, Pentagon officials said the US had spent about $550m on Libya, at a rate of about $40m a month.
As Cost of Libyan War Rises, Gates Scolds NATO for Not Pulling Its Weight - FoxNews.com

Quote:
As the Obama administration begins to take heat domestically for the rising costs of U.S. involvement in the Libyan war, Defense Secretary Robert Gates hammered European allies for not contributing their fair share in his farewell speech to NATO.

With just 20 days left in office, Gates lashed out, speaking directly to partner nations in Brussels, accusing European allies of dumping the majority of their military burdens onto the laps of the United States. He warned NATO that it risks becoming a relic the United States can no longer afford.
So, our NATO allies are depending on the US to foot this ridiculous bill.

No wonder they are now directly targeting Ghadaffi - they must save face, obama cannot let him remain in power, even though he and the NATO allies are way, way beyond the initial mission.

This is outrageous and illegal.

The Left will never again be able to complain about the costs of "war", about engaging in an illegal "war", about an administration lying about "war", about an unjustified, unwarranted, "war" that doesn't have the approval of Congress, a "war" that does not effect the national security of the US and a president "unilaterally" engaging in all of the above.

Oh sure they will. As long as it's *their* boy doing it they're fine with it.

Well....I know that as well. Should have read "they shouldn't be ALLOWED to complain", considering most of them are behind obama and his unilateral war and invasion of a muslim country that didn't present a national security risk to the US.

What are we doing there?

Ron Smith: What, exactly, are we doing in Libya? - baltimoresun.com

Quote:
Our president made a big deal of our participation being minimal and famously pledged that the operation would be over "in a matter of days, not weeks."

Remember, the ostensible reason for this war was "humanitarian." Now, NATO jets and attack helicopters are doing their humanitarian best to reduce much of Tripoli to rubble.
Yeah, remember that? Day not weeks. Started on March 20th. That's going on 3 months by my count. The cost would be minimal. Where is the accountability?

And the press tries to ignore the ongoing mess that we and NATO are making as we took sides in a bloody civil war.

Now we are doing the fighting FOR the so-called rebels and paying for most of it, it looks like.

No, it'll still be very possible to complain about an unjustified, unwarranted, "war" that did have the approval of Congress but was in the words of its creator HIS decision and was partly sold on the pure BS contention that oil revenues would pay for it.

Where's your outrage about the false premise for going to war with Libya, spending close to $1 Billion dollars, NOT going to Congress for approval for a war that posed no national security threat to the US?

So...obama LIED, right?

Days, not weeks...has turned into months.

Minimal costs...have turned into a major expense.

Minimal US presence has turned into US doing the heavy lifting.

Obama LIED us into another war.

Well, I know you rarely take the time to actually read anything , IF you did you'd know I've said on a number of occasions I believed our involvement in Libya was WRONG. I've even stated I believed it would be a good thing to impeach Obama and in the process put the way America goes to war on trial, unfortunately the right doesn't have the cojones to do anything but blather.

That being said, it is still a fact the Iraq war has been a huge waste of blood & $$$ that was based on BS, false promises, and has done NOTHING to benefit the US. Nothing Obama does changes the fact that Bush himself has claimed going to war in Iraq was HIS decision. He owns it and it's a wasteful piece of crap.

You got that right. Boehner & Co passed a bill "asking" the President to explain his position in Libya and gave him 21 days to come back with an answer.

That's one tough stand 60+ days after isn't it ?

Meanwhile, the true hero, Kucinich got his bill "get out of Libya NOW" defeated.

Congress is run by a majority of WIMPS.
