California Farm Labor Shortage 'Worst It's Been, Ever' - US* Business News - CNBC

The prisons are full of able bodied people. Seems like a simple solution. Put shock collars on them with GPS trackers and correction jolts if they get out of line. Time for these guys to start earning a living.

Why dosen't the State then rent the labor to the Farmers? Ever consider this is reimposing SLAVERY in the US?

Given the iron rule of economics; Supply will always meet demand at the right price why do the farmers not offer more money? Or does losing the crop not cost as much as picking it at a loss?

Then those farmers are dumb asses.

Know why?

Because if you don't farm the crop, if you just leave it to rot, insurance won't pay for even part of the loss.

Guys right now are farming entire fields of corn, I've heard of 2 kernels of corn in 20 acres, just so they can get insurance to cover the loss.

This is so complicated and I'm sure nobody will read what I write so I'm not sure why I bother.......

If there are not enough workers why is the government agencies dropping the ball in allowing in legal migrant workers? If there are so many wanting to come here to work, why would one want to take the illegal route when the legal route should be the better option?

As an illegal you are restricted in housing and pay. Not to mention having to always looking over your shoulder.

Some will now argue and this is indeed largely an argument to allow illegals a way to become legal but once legal they aren't going to work the fields for less than they can make at McDonalds.

This is why farmers can't get workers. They are used to paying low wages to immigrants and the low subsidizes rates they get to pay legal migrants. The government sets the figure that legal migrants can make and when the government restricts this class, farmers hate to have to pay the higher wages others demand.

So the question is, why is the Obama administration so bent on allowing in illegals when we already have a system to do this legally but according to the farmers they are dropping the ball?

From what I've seen, the Obama administration wants to allow kids, whose parents brought them here, who have shown the ability to be normal citizens the chance at citizenship. If you've served in the military, if you've gone to college, and you've grown up in the states from the time you're 5 years old, your as American as my son who was born here is.

We allow temporary work permits for farms like this. Because the farmer is bad at managing their business is the reason these things happen.

Maybe, but I haven't seen a bill signed by anyone to do that just yet.

I don't like farm subsidy, should be ended.

Why can't these Farms pay a living wage?

I see it said "The lack of workers is forcing farmers to pay more. In one of Underwood's fields, pickers are harvesting peppers for $9.25 a hour, or $5 a bucket, whichever is more."

Is that enough for housing, transportation, food etc for a single person, single parents, or families?

This is happening in state after state and it is a direct result of the crack down on illegals which Obama has lead. The reality is farmers have been cut off from the cheap foreign labor but they're still not offering enough to get US citizens interested. Right now most farm work is per piece which means a trained guy can make just under minimum wage if he's really good but an inexperienced guy working per piece will only make $2-$3 per hour and most Americans don't consider that enough to bother with. Especially since it will likely cost them a tank of gas to get out to BFE and get back; that tank would cost ~$80 but they'd only make ~$16-$24 per day doing farm work so it's not financially worth it.
