Right and I guess a drug that puts users in a temporary hallucinogenic state is by leaps and bounds worse than the most addictive substances out there that ruin lives and make people steal.
That line of thinking is nothing short of absolutely insane.

Doing anything with no intent of getting high, is abuse of life.
The important thing is to pick your highs wisely, and if drugs are part of the method, to pick the drug wisely.
Of course, this requires a lot of shopping and trying things on.
This is a terrific topic; are you familar with the background about Ibogaine? I think you are the third person I now "know" who has even had any idea about this plant and its abilities. It was actually discovered by a heroin addict (this was cazillion years ago), well a long time ago actually who tried it for the only purpose of getting high, he went through this whole thing for about 24 hours and when he came out of it, he had absolutely no desire, need or want to ever take heroin again. He began to help some of his heroin addicted friends with it and they too went through this 'process' for lack of a better word and when they came out of it, they too were done with heroin.
It is not exactly clear how it completely works however, it is known that the person who takes ibogaine goes through this 'thing' of seeing themselves, smatterings of their life, etc and somehow it takes them to that incident, that situation/point/issue that actually brought them to the point of addiction. I know it sounds totally wacky and absurd, but it does. The government learned about ibogaine and, I think it was 50's and began to do some experiments with it and also found enormous success with their "volunteers" and then someone decided, hey, might not be too good for the pharmaceutical industry, might not be too good for rehab places....so, ibogaine is illegal in the US; it is legal in some European countries and there are some clinics in the Caribbean which administer ibogaine to addicts as well as alcoholics. And, it works.
I know of someone actually who was a crack-cocaine addict, tried really hard to get off of it, rehab, etc., and someone who knew someone who knew someone, knew of an MD and RN in the states who does administer it...so...after giving it to this person, staying with this person for the mandated 24 hours (apparently the patient goes through a whole lot of emotional stuff and flashbacks of their life) when he came out of it, he has been clean, straight and drug free now for 9 years.
No doubt there may be some not perfect success stories with it too; I understand it does not work with someone who is extremely emotionally unstable, rather psychotic rather than "issues" or neurotic because of some split or disconnection of some sort with the synapses in the brain however, other than that, it would be an amazing, helpful and less expensive option than rehab centers.
So, why not? Hmmmm, perhaps the AMA (like the most powerful lobby group in the country) and the pharmaceutical companies encouraging ibogaine remain illegal.....

I knew about ibogaine because I'm sort of a psychonaut. I experiment with psychedelics (and sometimes stuff outside that category, but I always stay safe). One of my biggest interests is how certain chemicals affect brain functions and cause their own unique "highs".
I don't have any personal experience with ibogaine, but I've read tons of articles about it.
Thanks for responding; it is a fascinating topic, and ultimately will become a controversial one, again, I don't doubt.
I am sure someone will join in about it being 'folklore' or one of those other silly products like the Eccasiac tea (probably misspelling it) however, I find it quite interesting that it has been proven to work. Sometimes I wonder if we did not mess around so much in creating chemical copies of natural ingredients ( and I am not a nature freak) but rather used the real stuff, whatever it may be, we would be better off. Even with so much of the chemical replacements, like dixogin for your heart which is actually foxglove, there are some side effects...perhaps use the natural plant instead....certainly we would need lots of foxglove -smile....but it brings into play the issue of homeopathic medicine, the "like to like"...based on Hahneman who people ridiculed for quite some time and now, one of the best medical schools is named after him. They don't teach natural/homeopathic medicine in general at US medical schools (they do in Canada however) although there is now a bit more interest and potential integration of holistic/homeopathic medicine in medical studies.
So, perhaps, once again, it is about education...getting the word out there that there is a natural remedy that helps addicts not be addicts...think about that money that would save for health care and insurance costs....
