The con's are certainly digging deep for this one.
The Republicans have to go DEEP into the playbook to win this election.

When you look at them at this weeks convention you will see HOW OLD THEY ARE.

For many of the Goldwater-Reagan era Conservatives this is their last best chance AND THEY KNOW IT!

I just can't understand that.

You can rest assured Byrd is not dead, but visiting Teddy the swimmer up in Hyannis .

Is there a point to this thread? Is it that the right has nothing left in their bag of dirty tricks so now they have to dig up and old man that made mistakes 60 earlier? Psssst, your desperation and lack-0-class is showing.

Why not?

The dems thought because Strom Thurmond was against desegregation back in the late 40's, that it was important enough to try and demonize Trent Lott when he gave a testimonial for Strom on his 100 year old birthday a few years back.

They never bring up that Strom changed his position and was the FIRST Senator to have a black staff member.

Hypocritical much?

Did the Republicans drum out Strom Thurmond? No. And Thurmond had a history just as dark as Byrd's, if not darker.
Did the Republicans drum out Sen. Larry Craig after he reneged on his promise to quit? No.

The fact is, any Senator will be re-elected as long as he or she is popular in his home state. The parties have little power to 'drum out' any of them.

Both Byrd and Thurmond served far too long, and both should have retired long before they died, but they chose to keep running for re-election, and the citizens of their states kept hiring them for another term.

Child-like logic. This is as silly and annoying as the well he started it arguments between my toddler and pre-schooler.

I'm not sure that's true. They all need their parties support and money, or they are in deep trouble. The recent Akin fiasco, has the GOP saying they won't support him. We shall see how that plays out. Since Byrd brought home the pork, that means he was pleasing his lobbyists. Follow the money.
Some of the sleaziest people are high ranking members of the democrat party, but they defend them to the bitter end. Byrd, Ted Kennedy, Weiner, Clinton the rapist etc.,.

It came back with all these pics. Some are very interesting. He was tolerated in the Dem party until he died. I remember they use to wheel him out when he was too old to hardly walk to vote for the Dem positions.
Robert Byrd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You have to wonder how his life might have been different if his mother had lived.

You know that the KKK was created by a true son of the South Nathan Bedford Forrest who wanted to reverse the Reconstruction. Robert Byrd wasn't alone and it is the height of incrudulity to think that after the Klan got Reconstruction ended as part of the deal that got the GOP's Rutherford B Hayes in the White House in 1876 that the Klan vanished into the Southern night. The Klan was the the chain mailed fist that kept both blacks and outsiders under wraps. It was a part of that all American institution called Jim Crow or that stars and bars version of terrorism, sedition and xenophobia! Other targets of Klan action were any Jews dumb enough to move to small southern towns and lets not forget Catholics. At one time the Klan had at least 10 milion members and was powerful enough to elect the entire state government of Indiana. In the 1920s th Klan rallied on the Mall in Washington and more than 30 Senators and Congressmen marched in the parade or spoke at the Washington Monument.estimates give the attendence of this March as over 500,000 this was not matched until 1963 with the march and rally Dr King led.
