The boycott was about about Chick-fil-A's corporate donations to anti-gay (sometimes hate) groups. The personal statement you're referring to (Dan Cathy's anti gay marriage statement) took place on 7/16/2012 - the boycott against Chick-fil-A started in early 2011 (perhaps even late 2010).
