The new law will also provide government aid to help middle-class and low-income households afford coverage, the financial carrot that balances out the penalty.

Nonetheless, some people might still decide to remain uninsured because they object to government mandates or because they feel they would come out ahead financially even if they have to pay the penalty

However, the idea for an individual insurance requirement comes from Republican health care plans in the 1990s.

It's also a central element of the 2006 Massachusetts health care law signed by then-GOP Gov. Mitt Romney, now running against Obama and promising to repeal the federal law. The approach seems to have worked well in Massachusetts, with virtually all residents covered and dwindling numbers opting to pay the penalty instead.
That "free" healthcare won't apply for a large segment of the population, esp the lower-middle class and middle class.

Anyone who didn't already know about this penalty is a moron and doesn't deserve the right to vote.

LOL @ "is it November yet (OP)?" as if Romney will repeal Obamacare.

You guys keep forgetting that Romney loves this stuff too...he advocated for it at one time and he STILL believes in it. He just can't tell you that. Hell, why should he anyway? It aint like you didn't already know it. You just won't admit that you do.

That's ok. It'll be our little secret.

Everyone knew there would be millions who would be assessed the penalty. The real news in all of this is the fact that the number has increased over what previous estimates were saying and not by just a little bit, it's 50% more.
Quote:
After accounting for those who will not be subject to the penalty tax, CBO and JCT now estimate that about 6 million people will pay a penalty because they are uninsured in 2016 (a figure that includes uninsured dependents who have the penalty paid on their behalf) and that total collections will be about $7 billion in 2016 and average about $8 billion per year over the 2017–2022 period. Those estimates differ from projections that CBO and JCT made in April 2010: About two million more uninsured people are now projected to pay the penalty each year, and collections are now expected to be about $3 billion more per year.

I have been saying for over a year now, just wait until you get the bill. It is going to be scary for many, and those that cannot see it deserve what they get.

more like 10 million

Is there specific information on what sort of aid will this be or who will qualify? Is it really enough to balance out the penalty?

Pay a $1200 'tax' for NOT buying something. That's like checking out at the grocery store and the clerk says 'you have to pay a $100 tax today because you didn't buy brocoli'.
