I do live in a trailer court, beautiful neighborhood, the roads all loop so no cross traffic, kids play outside, basket ball in the street, etc. But I only use half my trailer (about 500 to 600 sf). I blocked the rest off with a curtain so I don't have to heat it so much. I spend a lot of time at work, or I am out, and I do a lot on my computer. I don't need couches and love seats and a dining table that seats 4 or 6. And I don't have to clean it....but I do admit the last time I went into the "other" area...the dust bunnies had run wild. <sigh>
If you can only afford to move into an apartment the size of dorm room, then that area's cost-of-living index is simply too high. I understand that model appeals to some people, but most Americans won't go for that. And forget raising a family in something like this.
It's not designed for 'most' Americans. It fills a niche in the housing market. It doesn't need to appeal to most people to be viable.
It's all according to how they're laid out. Ditch the bed, get a sofabed or futon, and save in space. I did it, until I got married and got a one bedroom apt. I figured it was less square feet to clean.

They should call them rooms instead of apts. It makes more sense.
That's fine. That's your choice. But other people want to make different choices, and they shouldn't be so limited by government regulations telling them they're not allowed to make that choice if it isn't hurting anyone.
Meh - lived in something only slightly larger (290 sq feet) after graduation. If the area is attractive (at the time: Walking distance to cafes, clubs & pubs, main library and train station) - well, why spend money on stuff when there's a nice city just begging to be lived in?
Wouldn't do very well for couples and families, of course. But for me, at the time, it hit the spot. Plus it could be cleaned in 25 minutes.
Agreed... I lived in something similar when I was single. The key is not to accumulate too much and select furniture designed for a small space.
