Lugar Backs Obama on Iran; Says

Quote:
Senator Richard Lugar, the leading Republican foreign-policy expert in Congress, said President Barack Obama is following the right policy in Iran and warned of the dangers of war.

“The idea of moving with our allies, as many as we can find, on effective sanctions on the country has been the right move” on Iran, Lugar said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt” airing this weekend.
The fact that the allegiances of many right wingers lie more with another nation's prime minister than our president and Republican foreign policy experts show how warped their sense of patriotism really is. I'd say it borders on treason.

I agree, and pretty big news. I wonder why there aren't many Republicans weighing in on the opinions of their top foreign policy expert.

Luger has always been a reasonable moderate and a lifelong public servant.
Someone from Indiana correct me if I'm wrong, but despite Indiana being a solid red state (except 2008), they rarely have the extreme right wingnuts. Sitting between Illinios, Michigan and Ohio might have something to do with it.

I'm surprised we haven't heard anyone call him an anti-Semite on this thread.

Finally, someone with some common sense emerges! It's fine for Israel to be our ally, however sometimes many on the right put Israel's interests first ahead of our own. We have to act in our own best interest first. If Israel wants to invade Iran because they feel their national security is truly threatened then that is for them to work out and decide. We should only go to war with Iran if we believe OUR national security is threatened in some way. We should never go to war solely based on speculation by a foreign prime minister or in for the sole benefit of a foreign nation. One area that I actually have some respect for Obama is on our relationship with Israel. Obama doesn't seem beholden to Bibi in a way that I fear Romney would be. Romney and Ryan are completely beholden to Israel.
