That is of course true, and a good point. But I think 90% plus would agree that a crucifix in a jar of urine (actual art project once funded by the federal gov't) is not. Even the lib media in my area can't resist running stories on gov't waste & fraud. Why? They know it sells papers, because there is such broad agreement that much gov't spending is just ridiculous.
Also, you left out a key part of 'the root of the issue,' namely that gov't should not be in the business of providing things that could otherwise be provided by the private sector. Much of what gov't does these days could and should be done by the private sector. It would be done for less cost (due to the effect of competition). Best of all, no more politocos spuriously talking about 'creating jobs' via gov't projects.
