You could argue that white southerners are just very very conservative, but that's not the whole story to me. Obama got a larger share of the white vote (in '08) in Utah of all places than he did in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and South Carolina.

Is it racially motivated?

The states with the largest percentage of black voters (deep south) also have the most Republican white voters. The correlation is there, but does are my sinister suspicions correct?

Take a look at this map of Georgia. North Georgia has virtually no black people, and the white voters skew more Democratic than anywhere else in the state besides Metro Atlanta. The area of Georgia that has the highest proportion of black voters is South Georgia, but white voters there skew the most Republican than anywhere else in the state.

This is a map of Georgia results in the 1964 presidential election. It's the election where the deep south voted Republican for the first time out of anger at President Johnson for passing the civil rights act. The red counties voted for Johnson and almost all of them are in N Georgia, where there aren't many black people. SW Georgia is the blackest area of the state, and it went strongest for Goldwater, the Republican (remember, blacks were still disenfranchised in most of Georgia, so this map almost exclusively shows the white vote).

This is the overall county swing map from 2004 to 2008. Red counties voted more Republican in 08 than 04.

And just so you know, I'm a white southerner, so I mean no disrespect or derision. But it's a topic that needs to be discussed.

Interesting map. Be nice to cross reference that by education as well. I predict low IQ scores in those southern states.

Mostly it has to do with lack of education but also due to low intelligence. They vote to screw themselves in the butt because at least the guy talks about Jesus while he's doing it.

Yeah, I know it's racially motivated. But let's see if any of our Republican friends will admit that they won their most loyal supporters with the help of racism.

You have a point. The white southern male has always been a self destroying creature. Only he would be dumb enough to fight and die for rich plantation owners to have slaves which of course made it impossible for him to find work.

I like the premise, but I don't want to comment on any correlations between IQ and party.

I live in Georgia and know many well educated people. Sadly, there are people less educated than a tree stump there, too. This is no different than anywhere else.

Here, I'll help you out for my county:

Williamson County, TN
2008 Results:
McCain 68%
Obama 30%

Percent with college degree: 52% (Average in US: 23%) So my county is much more educated than the nation.

Income: Consistently ranked one of the 20 wealthiest counties in the country:
#17 in 2011

I know it's hard for you to believe, but many successfull, educated people are conservative because we agree with conservative policies and don't give two hoots if the person is black, white, or green with polka dots.

I totally agree with you! There are many open minded, intelligent Republicans, and I was never trying to say that they don't exist! I came from a community like that. But you can't ignore the racial element in the GOP. They're an increasingly large block of the party, while the educated suburban vote in most of the country has moved towards the Democrats.

Wow, that list blows my mind, Brentwood! I can't believe how many of the wealthiest counties are in Virginia.
