That Prop is a scam. It is designed to allow for uranium mining at the Grand Canyon.

How many times does the state of Arizona have to be publicly humiliated?

It is the state of Arizona not the republic of Arizona. You should have realized that when you asked to become a state.

(If we could have a national referendum I would vote to turn Arizona back into a territory)

Maybe if we ask nicely, Mexico will take them back.

Interesting.

Can a State simply evict the Feds and declare that certain land within their borders, is now State land?

The article mentions at one point a law that "asks" the Feds to turn over land. I think I can guess what the Feds' reply to that polite query will be.

In fact, does the Constitution even say that the Fed govt can take land that "nobody owns" (as was the case for much land when the country first started) and own it? Or does all land automatically become state-owned under the Constitution - particularly the 10th amendment?

To look at it another way: When the territory of (say) Colorado was admitted to the United States as a state in 1876, how on earth did some of its land suddenly become Federal land instead of state land?

If Federal jurisdiction over the Grand Canyon is such a monstrous injustice, then it should be given back to its original owners. I'd sooner see a casino in the Grand Canyon than a uranium mine. Of course I'd rather have neither -- the Grand Canyon belongs to the nation -- but the Native Americans have a much stronger claim to it than the State of Arizona does anyway.

Which Indians do you mean? The Comanches/Apaches etc.? Or the Anasazi who came before them? Or the ones that came even before THEM? They are all VERY different groups, you know, both in culture and in time.

Careful what you wish for.

The national park is bordered by the Kaibab-Paiute, Havasupai, and Hualapai reservations, so I assume these tribes are the ones that would claim that land.
