Sure-NYC has only a tiny fraction of the damage NOLA did. Subways need pumped out and power restored...more inconvience than devastation.

Katrina was a category 5 if if I recall. Manhattan would be a mound of broken glass with a cat 3-5.

Awesome find (new yorker issue)

As for recovery, disasters have a funny way of boosting the economy. In this case, look at all the homeowners who are now facing unforeseen expenses.

unforeseen expense = spending money instead of saving it.

spending money instead of saving it. = economy-boosting cornerstone of capitalism.

Put it this way: when a homeowner has to go into debt to fix his house, we ALL win (except him)

Twisted, but that's how it works. Maybe for the better.

I guess no one remembers (probably not old enough) that most of the Carolina barrier islands have been rebuilt more than once.

Some places won't be rebuilt and the land won't be restored, but most of it will. Probably in time new roller coasters will be built, but it won't be the same. Some property will be taken by the sea and the sea will not give it back.

For those folks they will have to take the money and do something else. That's what happens when you build on sand instead of rock.

Will New York recover, I think those soon to be compled skyscrapers (one the tallest in America) that rise above Downtown give you the answer. Two more such buildings are planned to join them! I am in a New York State of Mind.

Of course NY will recover. They got hit pretty bad but it's nothing compared to Katrina.
