Today, however, is not that time, so I share my thoughts with those of you on the right side of the aisle, particularly those of the "tea party" and "extreme" variety.

Thank you. Sincerely.

Why, you ask?

Because last night was your doing.

I'll confess. I knew Obama was a lock for re-election since the moment Jon Huntsman bowed out the primaries, but I also know some of my moderate and left wing counterparts were rather nervous. Alas, you came through for us.

The truth of the matter is that you probably should have won this election, if you weren't such terrible screw ups.

Thanks to you...all of your Republican candidates had to become ridiculously extreme during their primaries, immediately damaging their credibility with moderates and independents.

Thanks to you...a group of mostly "tea party" governors and legislators had the audacity to undertake (and ultimately fail) in widespread disenfranchisement.

Thanks to you....a group of people you selected to represent you in both the government and media managed to embark on some of the most ridiculously offensive behavior in American politics since McCarthyism. We saw media commentators call a woman a **** because of her views on birth control, continually assert that our President was a Kenyan born hybrid socialist/communist intent on destroying the country he has dedicated his life to serving. We saw your candidates claim that conceptions resulting from rape were a gift from God. We watched you and them both act like the world was coming to a socialist end when Obama took a Republican healthcare proposal and got it implemented on the national level. We also got to watch your representatives blatantly state that their goal was to ensure that Obama failed and became a one term president, than in the same breath attack him for a supposed lack of bipartisanship. It got even more comical when we watched you demonize a GOP darling governor for his lavish praise of the same bipartisanship you claimed never existed.

There is much, much more of course, but you get my point. You put these people in charge, and what happened as a result? Well it just so happens that the moderate, independent types like the myself...the very same people who happen to decide elections...stepped up and busted you right on the end of your chin with a helluva right hook. This is of course a metaphor for the fact that your side only managed to win a single swing state, assuming Florida holds blue as predicted. It was your side who got rebuked tonight, not ours.

So as you figuratively lay there on the mat, seeing stars and trying to find the teeth that just got knocked out, you have a choice to make. You can try deluding yourself into thinking that you lost because you weren't conservative enough, that you need to be tougher on social issues and court the religious right even harder. Or you can come to your senses and put forth both moderate social and fiscal policies that actually represent the people like myself.

If you choose the later, we'll be there to extend our hand, help you off the mat and dust you off while we look forward to some real interesting and productive future elections. If it's the former, you can safely expect a repeat of this same beatdown in the future.

Regardless of which direction you go though, you have no one to blame for last night's debacle but yourselves. You don't get to blame the "liberal media" or any other nonsense. You put your positions out there and lost, so while you sit there watching the next four years of an Obama presidency, just remember what you told yourselves at the RNC.

"We built that."
